When in New Orleans- you will probably hit all the major attractions like the French Quarter (click here for a map); French Market; Jackson Brewery; steamboat ride; Aquarium of the Americas (click here for info); Audubon Zoo; Moonwalk along the banks of the Mississippi; the bar and restaurant scene; Riverwalk; Superdome; streetcar ride (take a virtual ride) and more- below you will find some sights not always appreciated by tourists. The Place to Start your exploration: Jackson Square (pictured above)- here you will find the St. Louis Cathedral- shown above (700 Chartres Street; (504)525-9585; daily tours); Jackson Square is a lively part of town (resembles some Parisian squares)- it houses the statue of Andrew Jackson on his horse. You can pick up mule- and horse-drawn carriages from the front of the square, clip-clopping through the French Quarter. Restaurants and coffee shops abound around the square.

Best View of the City: Top of the Mart, 33rd floor, World Trade Center, #2 Canal Street, NO LA 70130; tel: (504)522-9795; open M-F 10am-midnight; Sat 11am-1am; Sun 2pm-midnight; features a revolving restaurant with great views of the city and the Mississippi River.
Dixie Mania: Confederate Museum, 929 Camp Street; NO LA 70130; tel:(504) 523-4522, open M-Sat 10am-4pm; admission: $4.00 adults; children 16 and under $2.00; one of the oldest museums in Louisiana. Here you can see the clothing and other personal effects of the Confederate President Jefferson Davis and generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson and much more.
Destrehan Plantation: about 8 miles from the city center; it is a must if you want to get a flavor of life in the old South. 9999 River Road, Destrehan, LA 70047; tel: (504) 764-9315 or (504) 764-9345; open daily 9:30am to 4pm; small admission fee suggested.
