Aquarium of the Americas, affiliated with the Audubon Zoo (in Uptown), is located at Canal Street on the Mississippi River (near the French Quarter). It has more than 10,000 specimens of fish, birds and reptiles in their natural habitats. I especially the Caribbean Reef exhibit (you walk in a tunnel under the fish) as well as the awesome shark or Gulf of Mexico exhibit.
A gaint screen IMAX-30 theater is adjacent to the Aquarium and features some incredible shows, including underwater shows.
You can shuttle back and forth to between the zoo and the aquarium using a riverboat.

hours: open daily; April-September 9:30am to 5:30pm; October-March 9:30am to 4:30pm. Zoo and Aquarium are closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, Mardi Gras and the first Friday in May.
Admission fees (subject to change): Adults: $10.50 for Aquarium; $4.50 IMAX
Children: $5.00 for Aquarium; $4.00 IMAX
