What exactly is
Neon is a gaseous element discovered in 1898 by William Ramsey (Scottish
chemist who won 1904 Nobel Prize) and MW Travers.
- colorless, odorless, tasteless inert gas
- it emits a bright-red glow when conducting electricity in a tube
- it is used in advertising signs, lasers, Geiger counters, particle
detectors and high-intensity beacons
- liquid neon is a cryogenic refrigerant
- neon makes up (along with oxygen and nitrogen gases) the inner van
Allen radiation belt around the earth
- for you chemistry buffs: Symbol: Ne; Atomic number: 10; Atomic weight:
20.179; melting point (deg C):-248.67; boiling point (deg C): -246.048
